"Flipping Out" Week 1 - Part 2

Tuesday and Wednesday were pretty productive.  Tuesday we removed all the trash and furniture that wasn't screwed down.  Wednesday we finished removing all the rugs, gutted the kitchen, gutted the master bath, removed all doors from closets and rooms, removed all appliances.  Everything is going very smoothly in the first week. The goal for this week is to get everything torn out that needs to be removed.  We also started purchasing flooring and some of the things needed to redo the master and second bathrooms.  Originally we had hoped to save the shower doors but they were gross so out they went.  We also intended to refurbish the cabinets. Upon further inspection they were just too nasty so it was decided that new everything is basically the only way to go.  A few lessons that will make your flip a litte smoother:

1. Cut rugs into strips to remove. Be sure to change blades after every 10 ft or so of cutting. It makes it so easy.  Start from one side of the room, fold a piece over and cut the back, then fold and remove.

2. Make sure to check twice that all pipes, electric, etc are disconneted and clear of appliances and cabinets before you rip. We almost lost a pipe in the kitchen when removing the dishwasher.

3. Pull on walls you are  removing if they back to another wall you don't intend to remove. I had a close call in which I almost went through a wall I wanted to keep.  Luckily it was undamaged.

4. When faced with shady electric wiring, just call an electricial to assess the situation.  It is just more reassuring.

5. Don't waste space in your dumpster with old appliances. Thanks to Adam, they are on their way to the dump where apparently we could make a few dollars instead of paying for their disposal.  This probably saved us from needing another dumpster right away.

6. Cabinets are fun to destroy, but to limit your wall repairs, unscrew them as opposed to sledging them. You'll appreciate it later.

That's it for today. More at the end of the week.
